Despite the recent awful weather, spring is only around the corner. This generally means that you’ll start using your heating less and less. People are more likely to worry about the weather being too hot in the spring and summer months than having any gas related issues, such as gas leaks and carbon monoxide poisoning. LJS Gas and Heating has an in-house team of gas engineers in Basingstoke, all certified in gas work and safety and we’re here to inform you what the seasonal transition means for your gas appliances and why it’s still important to have them checked during summer.

Summer statistics

It’s spring/summer 2020, the sun is shining and the last thing on your mind is gas safety, which is ok as the heating is off and therefore shouldn’t be an issue… right? Wrong.

Gas Safe Register inspection figures state that a worrying 5.5 million homes in the UK have unsafe gas appliances and in recent years this has been found to be 18% higher in summer months than the amount of unsafe sites found in winter. Despite this discovery, a survey of over 2,000 adults found that only 1 in 5 would only just consider getting their gas appliances checked if they were to stop working.

Now’s the time

Any of the gas appliances in your home can produce carbon monoxide which is a highly poisonous gas. Carbon monoxide occurs when natural gas or liquid petroleum gas doesn’t burn correctly – this is extremely dangerous.

Gas leaks, fires and carbon monoxide poisoning (although unlikely) can occur at any time of the year. Just because you use your gas more in the winter, doesn’t mean you should only have it checked in the colder months. If you’re local and your annual gas check is due in the spring/summer, get it booked in with one of our gas engineers in Basingstoke!

Speaking of gas safety in the summer, Jonathan Samuel, chief executive of Gas Safe Register, states:

‘The sun may be shining but that doesn’t mean that checking your gas appliances can be left until later in the year when you may be cranking up your heating. Our inspections data shows that it doesn’t matter what time of year it is, your gas appliance could still put your health and home at risk if it’s not been safety checked recently. It’s important that gas appliances are checked regularly, we recommend on an annual basis so that you can have peace of mind that they are working safely and efficiently whilst making the most of the Great British summer.’
